BPC-157 vs GHK-Cu

The short answer

Neither is an approved drug, and neither has been shown to heal tendon, muscle or joint injuries in people345. GHK-Cu, a copper peptide also sold in skin creams, has been tested in controlled human trials only on skin and wounds, with mixed results678910. The five small published studies of BPC-157 that FDA found gave it to fewer than 100 people, for 2 weeks or less, and none of them looked at skin4111213. Both are sold in vials for injection, but we found no published human study of either one injected under the skin on its own, or of the two together12414.

What it isA lab-made chain of 15 amino acids that FDA describes as a fragment of a protein first found in human gastric juice426.Copper bound to GHK, a peptide of 3 amino acids that occurs naturally in human blood; skin-care labels list it as copper tripeptide-12728.
How it might workUnknown: FDA says its targets have not been identified, and animal and cell studies suggest new blood-vessel growth and dampened inflammation429.Not settled: in rat wounds it increased the buildup of collagen, and lab and animal studies report new blood-vessel growth and anti-inflammatory effects303132.
Studied in people forFive small published studies: safety in healthy men, ulcerative colitis, knee pain, bladder pain, and IV safety in 2 people4111213.Skin and wounds in controlled trials: diabetic foot ulcers, leg ulcers, skin after laser treatment, facial wrinkles and sparse eyebrows; two uncontrolled hair-loss studies injected it as one ingredient of a mixture78910333435.
Best human evidenceOne randomized trial, in 53 people with ulcerative colitis and reported only as a meeting abstract, which found no statistically significant benefit4.Randomized wound trials: a gel closed a median 98.5% of the area of diabetic ulcers on the sole of the foot vs 60.8% with an inactive gel (the abstract gives no patient count), but a cream did no better than placebo on leg ulcers in the 86 patients who could be assessed79.
Biggest documented riskUnknown in people; in 28-day studies in rats and dogs it altered blood clotting and raised liver-related blood markers, and FDA found no study of its cancer risk436.Unknown for injection: we found no published human study of GHK-Cu injected on its own, and a 2026 review says injected products would need studies tracking copper build-up in the liver, nerves and kidneys1432.
Lab tests of gray-market vials92 of the latest 200 tests by Finnrick, an independent testing service, failed (27 May to 25 September 2026), and a bodega vial tested for WIRED held no BPC-1573738.43 of Finnrick’s latest 200 tests failed (23 June to 25 September 2026)39.

Which has better evidence for healing injuries?

A 2026 review for orthopedic and sports medicine doctors found that BPC-157’s reported benefits for tendon and muscle repair are largely unconfirmed in human trials, and that no clinical data support GHK-Cu’s use for muscle, bone or joint conditions3. For BPC-157, a 2025 systematic review found 36 relevant studies, 35 of them preclinical (done in animals or cells)15. In rats it sped the healing of cut Achilles tendons, but in a 2026 rat study its gains in healing scores were not statistically significant4041. Its only human data on joints come from a 2021 chart review: of 16 knee-pain patients reached by phone, 4 of whom had also received thymosin beta-4, 14 said the injections relieved their pain, and there was no control group11. As of 7 October 2026, a trial of BPC-157 after rotator cuff surgery was not yet recruiting and was not due to start until January 202742.

GHK-Cu’s human healing evidence comes from skin wounds79. In 1996 FDA cleared a GHK-Cu gel, Iamin, as a wound dressing, which is a device clearance, not a drug approval20. A 2026 systematic review of GHK-Cu used alone for cosmetic purposes, with searches to March 2026, included 20 studies, 18 of them preclinical and only 2 randomized trials31.

Has anyone tested BPC-157 and GHK-Cu together?

No. As of 7 October 2026, all 7 PubMed records found by a search for both names are reviews, and ClinicalTrials.gov lists no trial of the pair12.

Blends containing both have been sold: a Health Canada advisory of 24 December 2025 on products seized from a Vancouver gym listed ‘Glow’ vials labeled with BPC-157, TB-500 and GHK-Cu, and ‘Klow’ vials labeled with the same three plus KPV43.

A blend makes problems harder to trace: when a user’s skin and gums darkened after injecting a BPC-157 and TB-500 product, FDA could not tell which peptide was responsible4. Our BPC-157 vs TB-500 comparison covers the ‘Wolverine stack’ and other BPC-157 blends.

What are the side effects and risks of each?

FDA raises the same concern about injecting either one: peptides can clump and carry impurities that may trigger unwanted immune reactions417. Both also promote new blood-vessel growth in lab or animal studies2931. A 2026 review lists abnormal blood-vessel growth and cancer among the potential risks of unapproved peptides such as BPC-157, and another says GHK-Cu’s blood-vessel effect could be unwanted in tumors3244.

On 16 September 2026, Reuters reported that FDA’s adverse event data held 10 reports of serious adverse events involving BPC-157 since 2021, 8 of them in 2026; FDA notes that such a report does not confirm that the product caused the event45. A clinician interviewed by NPR said they see GHK-Cu self-injectors with injection-site irritation, infections and, in some cases, raised liver enzymes and copper levels; NPR noted it was unclear whether GHK-Cu or undisclosed substances or impurities were responsible6.

Copper adds its own risks with GHK-Cu: a researcher who studies GHK-Cu told NPR that overloading the body with too much copper is among the potential risks of injecting it, and copper is a recognized contact allergen in some people632.

How do regulators treat them?

In the US, BPC-157 and injectable GHK-Cu were both once in Category 2, FDA’s group of compounding substances that may present significant safety risks; their nominations were withdrawn, and as of 1 October 2026 FDA’s safety-risk page listed both as ‘nominated but withdrawn’17. FDA’s compounding advisers voted 8-6, with 1 abstention, on 23 July 2026 in favor of letting pharmacies compound BPC-157, against FDA staff advice446. The vote is advisory, and as of 30 September 2026 FDA had not proposed a rule or changed BPC-157’s status164647.

GHK-Cu’s status changed twice in 2026: on 22 April 2026, after its nominations were withdrawn, FDA dropped non-injectable GHK-Cu from Category 1, the group FDA lets pharmacies use while it decides on them16. After one nominator clarified on 5 May 2026 that it had withdrawn only the injectable route, FDA added the non-injectable forms back to Category 116. FDA intends to consult its advisers on GHK-Cu before the end of February 202716.

Health Canada has listed both among unauthorized injectable peptides it has seized, and in May 2026 a Canadian supplier recalled GHK-Cu and BPC-157 powders from compounding and community pharmacies as unauthorized active ingredients4849. On 1 April 2026, US prosecutors announced the indictment of a Utah physician on charges of receiving misbranded drugs from China, including BPC-157 and GHK-Cu, and selling them to patients; an indictment is only an allegation50.

Questions people ask

What is the difference between BPC-157 and GHK-Cu?

BPC-157 is a lab-made peptide of 15 amino acids described as a fragment of a protein from human gastric juice, while GHK-Cu is copper bound to GHK, a peptide of 3 amino acids that occurs naturally in human blood427. GHK-Cu is also a skin-care ingredient tested in small skin and wound trials, while BPC-157’s few human studies looked at a bowel disease, knee pain and bladder pain46111231.

Is BPC-157 or GHK-Cu better for skin?

Only GHK-Cu has been tested on skin in people: in a maker-funded trial in 20 women, wrinkle volume fell 24.1% on the GHK-Cu side of the face vs 15.0% on the placebo side, and in 18 adults the eyebrow treated with a GHK-Cu serum gained hairs while the placebo side did not change significantly1033. After laser skin treatment, though, it gave no objective benefit8. FDA’s review lists no human study of BPC-157 for skin, and we found none of either one injected for skin414.

Which is better for healing injuries, BPC-157 or GHK-Cu?

Neither: human studies have not shown that either one heals tendon, muscle or joint injuries3. BPC-157 has been tested on tendon injuries mainly in rats, with mixed results, while GHK-Cu’s human healing data come from skin wounds, where a gel helped diabetic foot ulcers but a cream did not help leg ulcers794041.

Can you take BPC-157 and GHK-Cu together?

No published or registered study has tested the combination, so its effects and risks are unknown12. On its own, each carries a possible risk of immune reactions when injected, according to FDA417. Blends containing both have been seized in Canada, and when a blend causes a reaction it can be impossible to tell which ingredient was responsible, as FDA found with a BPC-157 and TB-500 product443.

Is GHK-Cu safer than BPC-157?

As skin care, GHK-Cu has the longer record: copper peptide creams and serums have been sold for decades and studied in human trials6. Injected under the skin, neither has published human data showing it is safe, and FDA flags possible immune reactions for both4617.
