Are peptides legal? A status tracker
Where 44 peptides stand with the FDA, US compounding pharmacies, sport's anti-doping rules and Australia's poisons law. Every cell links to its source.
Popular “research” peptides, including BPC-157, TB-500, MOTS-c and retatrutide, are not FDA-approved drugs10111213. US compounding pharmacies may not make them either, and the same goes for CJC-1295, ipamorelin and cagrilintide14151617. A few peptides, such as semaglutide, tirzepatide and tesamorelin, are approved, but only as specific prescription medicines like Ozempic and Egrifta, not as “research” vials1819202122.
Online sellers offer BPC-157, tesamorelin and other peptides in vials labeled “research use only”102123. FDA says such labels do not stop a product from being a drug when the evidence shows it is meant for people2124. In 2026, US sellers faced FDA warning letters, a jury conviction and a 21-month prison sentence2122252627. Sport bans many of these peptides: the World Anti-Doping Agency (WADA) prohibits BPC-157, TB-500, MOTS-c, CJC-1295 and ipamorelin28.

What changed recently
- 6 Oct 2026FDA posted warning letters, dated 23 and 24 September 2026, to two websites selling unapproved injectable semaglutide to US consumers, including products called “Semanext Injection” and “Semanat Injection”, and asked both to stop selling unapproved and misbranded drugs to US consumers56.
- 6 Oct 2026Australia’s TGA said it had issued 12 infringement notices totaling A$126,720 over the alleged unlawful importing and advertising of prescription medicines, including three to two Victoria-based people over Mounjaro (tirzepatide) pens they allegedly imported7.
- 1 Oct 2026Greenwich Rx, a compounding pharmacy in Texas, recalled some lots of its compounded glutathione injection because endotoxin levels might be too high, warning that such injections could cause fever, shock and death125.
- 29 Sep 2026The US Justice Department announced that a federal grand jury in Florida had charged two Indian nationals with conspiracy and smuggling over an alleged scheme to sell counterfeit Ozempic, a brand of semaglutide, to US distributors; one of them, extradited from Italy, first appeared in court that day. An indictment is only an allegation118.
- 28 Sep 2026Australia’s Therapeutic Goods Administration (TGA) announced Federal Court proceedings against two former directors of BioV8 and, if the court grants leave, the former company, now in liquidation, alleging unlawful advertising of peptides such as BPC-157 and CJC-1295 between June 2024 and July 202523.
- 25 Sep 2026In late September 2026 Health Canada posted a second dose-display recall of Apo-Semaglutide, Apotex’s generic semaglutide pen, because one lot may show and deliver a lower dose than expected; the first, posted on 27 August, involved a lot that could deliver a higher dose than expected126127128.
- 21 Sep 2026WADA published its 2027 Prohibited List, in force from 1 January 2027; it keeps BPC-157, TB-500, CJC-1295 and ipamorelin banned and adds the word “peptides” to its section on unapproved substances4045.
- 18 Sep 2026A federal jury in New Haven, Connecticut, convicted one of the two people who ran Pinned Aminos, which sold drugs labeled for research use; the other had pleaded guilty and was sentenced in August to three years’ probation26.
- 27 Aug 2026The US Court of Appeals for the Fifth Circuit upheld FDA’s decisions ending the tirzepatide and semaglutide shortages, which had allowed mass compounding of both drugs34129.
- 24 Aug 2026FDA sent warning letters to online peptide sellers, saying “research” products including PT-141, tesamorelin and a semaglutide product were unapproved new drugs21222325130.
- 24 Jul 2026The UK’s medicines regulator, the MHRA, said retatrutide has not been authorized for use in the UK, “meaning anyone selling this product is doing so illegally”131.
- 23 Jul 2026FDA’s Pharmacy Compounding Advisory Committee voted to recommend letting pharmacies compound BPC-157, TB-500 and MOTS-c, against the advice of FDA staff; its votes only advise FDA1011132.
- 23 Jul 2026Federal prosecutors in Michigan announced a 21-month prison sentence for a man who sold misbranded drugs from China, including semaglutide and tirzepatide, through websites that called them “for research purposes only”27.
- 17 Jun 2026FDA sent a warning letter to an online seller saying its “research” gonadorelin was an unapproved new drug; labels such as “RESEARCH USE ONLY” did not change that the products were meant for people133.
- 15 Apr 2026FDA said it would remove 12 peptides, including BPC-157, TB-500 and MOTS-c, from Category 2, its list of ingredients that may present significant safety risks, because their nominators had withdrawn the nominations; a law firm notes that this does not make them eligible for compounding1652.
- 9 Apr 2026Health Canada warned against injecting peptides bought online, named BPC-157, TB-500, MOTS-c and retatrutide among unauthorized products it has seized, and said “research use only” labels do not make such products legal134.
What does US law say about buying research peptides?
FDA’s 2026 warning letters told online sellers that “research” peptides they sold for people, such as PT-141 and gonadorelin, were unapproved new drugs21222325130133. The 2026 US criminal cases cited here were against sellers: a jury convicted one of the two people who ran websites selling drugs labeled for research use, and a Michigan seller got 21 months in prison2627.
BPC-157, CJC-1295, ipamorelin and melanotan II are not federal controlled substances135. Imports are another matter: FDA’s Import Alert 66-41 lets it detain some melanotan, ipamorelin and PT-141 shipments without examining them64. FDA says that in most circumstances it is illegal for individuals to import unapproved drugs for personal use, though its staff may make exceptions in limited situations4.
What does “for research use only” mean?
It is a label: online sellers offer peptides such as BPC-157 and tesamorelin in vials marked “research use only”1021. FDA says labels like “research purpose only” and “not for human consumption” do not stop a product from being a drug when the evidence shows it is meant for people2324.
- FDA’s August 2026 warning letters said sellers’ own websites, including a “peptide calculator”, a “peptide guide” and comparison posts, showed their “research use only” vials were really sold for people212225.
- On 18 September 2026 a federal jury in New Haven, Connecticut, convicted one of the two people who ran Pinned Aminos, whose website carried what prosecutors called a false disclaimer that its products were “intended for laboratory and research use only”; the other had pleaded guilty in April and was sentenced in August to three years’ probation26.
- Eli Lilly’s August 2026 lawsuits target sellers that it says falsely claim their retatrutide is for “research-use only” when it is meant for people13.
- Health Canada says research-use-only labeling “does not make these products legal”, and an MHRA official told the Guardian that the UK regulator disregards “research purposes” claims used to get around medicines rules134136.
Why can’t US pharmacies make BPC-157 and other popular peptides?
Under section 503A of federal drug law, a compounding pharmacy may make a drug from a bulk ingredient only if the ingredient passes one of three tests14. It must meet a USP monograph (a published quality standard), be part of an FDA-approved drug, or be on FDA’s 503A bulks list14. While FDA builds that list, it sorts nominated ingredients into categories15. For Category 1, FDA does not intend to act against pharmacies that use the ingredient while it is evaluated, which is not approval14. Category 2 holds ingredients that FDA says “may present significant safety risks”16.
BPC-157, TB-500, MOTS-c, CJC-1295, ipamorelin, melanotan II and PEG-MGF are in no 503A category, so pharmacies have no lawful route to compound them1552. Under FDA’s separate policy for outsourcing facilities (503B), ipamorelin is in Category 2, the list of ingredients that may present significant safety risks16. In July 2026 FDA’s advisers voted to recommend adding BPC-157, TB-500 and MOTS-c to the 503A bulks list. The votes only advise FDA, which has said it will announce any final decision through notice-and-comment rulemaking; in the meantime it could also place them in Category 1 of its interim policy52132. As of 8 October 2026 it had done neither: the three were still in no category, FDA had posted no minutes of the meeting, and no proposed rule had appeared in the Federal Register15137138.
- CJC-1295 and ipamorelin: FDA’s advisers voted against allowing both in late 2024120139.
- Kisspeptin-10: in Category 2 since September 2023 and still there in the list updated in May 2026, so FDA says it would consider acting against a pharmacy that compounds it141516.
- Pentadeca arginate: sold as an arginine salt of BPC-157, it is in no 503A category, and FDA’s July 2026 review of BPC-157 covered only the free base and the acetate salt. FDA told its advisers that other salts “must be evaluated for eligibility”, so by our reading pharmacies may not make it1015113140.
- GHK-Cu: non-injectable forms, such as topical products, are in Category 1, so FDA does not intend to act against pharmacies that compound them under its interim policy; injectable GHK-Cu is in no category141516.
- GHK-Cu, melanotan II, LL-37, dihexa and PEG-MGF: FDA plans to consult its advisers on all five at a meeting before the end of February 202715141.
- Glutathione and NAD+: both are in Category 1, so for now FDA does not intend to act against pharmacies that compound them under the conditions of its interim policy1415.
- Semaglutide and tirzepatide: now that the shortages are over, pharmacies may no longer make routine copies of these approved drugs30.
- Retatrutide and cagrilintide: FDA says they “cannot be used in compounding under federal law”17.
- Tesamorelin: FDA says biologics cannot be compounded and lists Egrifta, the approved tesamorelin, as a biologic, so by our reading pharmacies have no route; FDA has issued no tesamorelin-specific notice6768.
- Thymosin beta-4: in a January 2026 warning letter to an outsourcing facility, FDA said thymosin beta-4 is a biological product, and that biological products are not eligible for the exemptions that let pharmacies and outsourcing facilities compound drugs56.
- Sermorelin, gonadorelin and PT-141: an FDA list flags sermorelin and gonadorelin as components of approved drugs, USP publishes a quality standard for gonadorelin acetate, and bremelanotide (PT-141) is the active ingredient of Vyleesi578184. By our reading, that gives pharmacies a possible route for all three, but FDA has not said so for any of them14.
Semaglutide and tirzepatide are covered in our guide to compounded GLP-1s: routine copies ended when FDA declared their shortages over, and in August 2026 a federal appeals court upheld both decisions3034129.
Which peptides are FDA-approved drugs?
- Semaglutide: Ozempic, Wegovy and Rybelsus18.
- Tirzepatide: Mounjaro and Zepbound19.
- Liraglutide: Victoza, approved in 2010 for type 2 diabetes, and Saxenda, approved in 2014 for weight management; generic versions are approved too37142143.
- Tesamorelin: Egrifta, approved in 2010 to reduce excess belly fat in adults with HIV and lipodystrophy (abnormal changes in body fat)2065.
- Bremelanotide (PT-141): Vyleesi, approved in 2019 for low sexual desire in women before menopause81144.
- Oxytocin: Pitocin and generic injections, used in hospitals to start or strengthen labor and to control bleeding after birth104105. The nasal sprays and lozenges that telehealth companies sell are made by compounding pharmacies and are not FDA-approved67145.
- Elamipretide (SS-31): Forzinity, given accelerated approval in 2025 to improve muscle strength in people with Barth syndrome, a rare inherited disease, who weigh at least 30 kg94146.
- Afamelanotide (melanotan I): Scenesse, an implant approved in 2019 for adults with erythropoietic protoporphyria, a rare disorder that makes sunlight painful147148.
- Sermorelin: once approved as Geref, but its maker stopped selling it in 2008 and FDA withdrew the approvals in 20097173.
- Gonadorelin: Factrel, approved in 1982 as a single injection to test the pituitary gland, and Lutrepulse, approved in 1989 and given in pulses by a pump, are both listed as discontinued; gonadorelin injections remain approved for cattle8283149150.
An approval covers the approved medicine, not “research” vials of the same peptide, which FDA has not checked for quality23144. FDA’s 2026 warning letters called “research” PT-141, tesamorelin and semaglutide products unapproved new drugs212223.
BPC-157, pentadeca arginate, TB-500, thymosin beta-4, PEG-MGF, MOTS-c, CJC-1295, ipamorelin, melanotan II, retatrutide and cagrilintide are not FDA-approved1011121332515355626970. GHK-Cu, glutathione and NAD+ are not FDA-approved drugs either, though GHK-Cu is sold as a cosmetic ingredient and glutathione as a supplement pill57585992. Lilly plans to seek FDA approval for retatrutide in the first quarter of 2027, and Novo Nordisk expects an FDA decision in late 2026 on CagriSema, which contains cagrilintide151152.
Are peptides banned in sport?
Many are: WADA’s Prohibited List bans BPC-157 at all times under S0, its section for substances with no current government approval for human use28. In its section on peptide hormones and growth factors, it bans thymosin beta-4, TB-500 and mechano growth factors (MGFs), including the pegylated form sold as PEG-MGF, under S2.3; AOD-9604 under S2.2.3; and CJC-1295, ipamorelin, MK-677, sermorelin, tesamorelin, GHRP-2, GHRP-6 and hexarelin under S2.2.428153. It bans gonadorelin and kisspeptin for male athletes under S2.2.1, and MOTS-c for all athletes under S4.4.1; the 2027 List keeps all of these bans2840.
Under the rules of the US Anti-Doping Agency (USADA), using or possessing a non-Specified substance, the stricter class that includes everything in S2, brings a default four-year ban28154. A US triathlete received a four-year ban in 2025 for possessing and using BPC-157 and TB-500 and for encouraging followers to buy and use banned substances; the ban was one year shorter than the five years USADA had sought because the athlete admitted the violations and accepted the sanction within 20 days154. In 2024 an arbitrator banned a US short track speed skater for one year after USADA charged the athlete with using BPC-157 and DHEA, another banned substance; the athlete had declared taking a supplement whose label listed ‘BPC-157 Arginate Salt’, the form sold as pentadeca arginate, and a laboratory found both substances in its capsules54. USADA says a therapeutic use exemption (TUE), the permission that lets an athlete use a banned substance for medical reasons, is unlikely to be approved for BPC-157155.
- Semaglutide and tirzepatide are not banned; WADA tracks them in its Monitoring Program2831.
- Bremelanotide (PT-141), elamipretide (SS-31), liraglutide, oxytocin and orforglipron are not named; each is approved in the US, so by our reading they fall outside S028404681.
- Afamelanotide (melanotan I) is not named; it is approved in the US and the EU, so by our reading it falls outside S02863156.
- Cerebrolysin, DSIP, mazdutide, selank, thymalin, thymosin alpha-1 and VIP are not named, and each is approved as a medicine in at least one country, so by our reading they fall outside S0 too2840414596102106115117122.
- Glutathione and NAD+ are not named, but IV infusions or injections of more than 100 mL in 12 hours are banned unless given during hospital treatment, surgery or clinical tests28.
- Retatrutide, cagrilintide, survodutide, melanotan II, dihexa, epitalon, KPV and LL-37 are not named, but by our reading they fall under S0284061.
- GHK-Cu is not named, and whether S0 covers it is unclear2860. Semax, approved in Russia, is not named either; by our reading it falls outside S0, but whether S2’s ban on corticotrophins and similar substances covers it is unclear2840110111157.
Are peptides legal in Australia?
Australia’s Poisons Standard, in the version in force from 1 October 2026, lists BPC-157, TB-500, thymosin beta-4, AOD-9604, CJC-1295, ipamorelin, GHRP-2, GHRP-6, hexarelin and MK-677 (ibutamoren) as prescription-only medicines (Schedule 4)29. It also lists them in Appendix D, clause 5, “poisons for which possession without authority is illegal”, so under state and territory law they must not be possessed without authority, such as a prescription29. It does not name pentadeca arginate, but it says a reference to a substance includes every salt of it, so its BPC-157 entries also cover pentadeca arginate, which is sold as an arginine salt of BPC-15729140. These controls are not new: TB-500, CJC-1295 and ipamorelin were already prescription-only and in Appendix D in the standard in force from 1 February 2023, and BPC-157, absent from the standard in force from 1 February 2024, was added to both from 1 June 202489158. Melanotan II, semaglutide, tirzepatide, liraglutide, afamelanotide (melanotan I), oxytocin, VIP, gonadorelin, sermorelin and injectable glutathione are prescription-only too, but none of them is named in Appendix D; by our reading, sermorelin may still be covered, because the clause 5 entry for growth hormone releasing hormones includes “those separately specified in Schedule 4”29.
The standard does not name MOTS-c, NAD+, bremelanotide or kisspeptin, and we have not established how it applies to tesamorelin or GHK-Cu, or whether its entry for insulin-like growth factors covers PEG-MGF29. In a September 2026 safety advisory, reported by ABC News and republished by Pharmacy Today, the TGA said retatrutide has not been approved by it or by any comparable international regulator159160.
- In October 2026 the TGA said two Victoria-based people had been issued infringement notices of A$7,920 and A$3,960 over the alleged importing of Mounjaro (tirzepatide) pens; all 12 notices in that announcement, totaling A$126,720, were paid between July and September 20267.
- In late September 2026 the TGA began Federal Court proceedings over BioV8’s alleged peptide advertising, seeking declarations and financial penalties; the case against the company, now in liquidation, needs the court’s permission23.
- In August 2026, 7NEWS reported that the TGA had seized a melanotan II nasal spray whose tested doses varied widely161. It also reported that a New South Wales individual had received 27 infringement notices totaling A$101,412 for allegedly supplying melanotan II161.
- In September 2026 the TGA said in a safety advisory, reported by ABC News, that it had received a report of a torn esophagus linked to a product sold as retatrutide; its tests of a sample in the original unmarked vial found undeclared semaglutide and no retatrutide159160.
What about the UK and Canada?
- UK: the Guardian reported in April 2026 that the Medicines and Healthcare products Regulatory Agency (MHRA) was investigating whether UK clinics break the law with claims about the benefits of experimental peptide therapies. An MHRA spokesperson told the paper that peptide injections offered with medicinal claims are treated as medicines, and an MHRA official said the agency disregards “research purposes” claims used to avoid medicines rules136.
- UK: the MHRA says anyone selling retatrutide there is “doing so illegally”, and in October 2025 it announced that it had seized more than 2,000 unlicensed retatrutide and tirzepatide pens at an illegal production site in Northampton131162.
- Canada: Health Canada says peptides are generally regulated as prescription drugs, and that “research use only” labels do not make such products legal134. It has seized unauthorized injectable peptides, including BPC-157, TB-500, thymosin beta-4, MOTS-c and retatrutide134163.
- Canada: in May 2026 a supplier recalled GHK-Cu and BPC-157 powders sold to compounding and community pharmacies as unauthorized active ingredients164.
- Canada: gonadorelin is on Health Canada’s Prescription Drug List, and none of the seven human gonadorelin products in its drug database is marketed165166.
Questions people ask
Is it legal to buy research peptides?
In the US, research peptides such as BPC-157, TB-500 and MOTS-c are unapproved drugs101112. In 2023 FDA warned a seller that marketed BPC-157 and TB-500 for people24. In 2026 it warned sellers of other “research” peptides, such as PT-141, tesamorelin and retatrutide, and federal prosecutors won cases against sellers of drugs labeled for research use2122252627. FDA says importing unapproved drugs for personal use is illegal in most circumstances4. In Australia, the Poisons Standard lists BPC-157, TB-500, CJC-1295 and ipamorelin among “poisons for which possession without authority is illegal”, such as possession without a prescription; states and territories apply it through their own laws29.
What peptides are legal in the US?
FDA-approved peptide medicines, sold on prescription, include semaglutide (Ozempic, Wegovy), tirzepatide (Mounjaro, Zepbound), tesamorelin (Egrifta) and bremelanotide (Vyleesi), the approved form of PT-1411819206581144. Until it decides whether pharmacies may use glutathione and NAD+, FDA has said it does not intend to act against those that compound them under its conditions; that is an enforcement policy, not approval1415. Research peptides such as BPC-157, TB-500, MOTS-c and retatrutide are not approved, and pharmacies may not make them101112131517.
Can you get in trouble for peptides?
Sellers have: in 2026 FDA warned online peptide sellers, a jury convicted one of the two people who ran websites selling drugs labeled for research use, and a Michigan seller got 21 months in prison2122252627. Athletes face bans for using or possessing banned peptides, by default four years for substances such as TB-500154. In Australia, the Poisons Standard lists BPC-157, TB-500, CJC-1295 and ipamorelin among “poisons for which possession without authority is illegal”, such as possession without a prescription; states and territories apply it through their own laws29.
Is MOTS-c legal to buy?
MOTS-c is not an approved drug, and FDA’s reviewers found no published study in which people were given it12. US pharmacies may not compound it; in July 2026 FDA’s advisers voted 7-5 to recommend adding it to the list of ingredients pharmacies may use, but FDA had not acted by 8 October 202615132138. WADA bans it in sport, and Health Canada lists it among unauthorized peptides it has seized28134.
Is BPC-157 legal?
BPC-157 is not approved as a medicine anywhere, and US pharmacies may not compound it1015. In July 2026 FDA’s advisers voted 8-6 to recommend adding it to the list of ingredients pharmacies may use, but the vote is advisory and FDA had not changed its status by 8 October 202615132138. WADA bans it at all times, and Australia’s Poisons Standard lists it among poisons that must not be possessed without authority2829.
Is retatrutide legal?
Eli Lilly, its developer, said in August 2026 that no regulator anywhere had approved retatrutide, and FDA says it cannot be used in compounding1317. FDA has warned companies that sold retatrutide labeled “for research purposes” for human use, and the UK’s MHRA says anyone selling it there is doing so illegally17131. Lilly plans to seek FDA approval in the first quarter of 2027151.
Does a “research use only” label make a peptide legal?
No: FDA says labels like “research purpose only” and “not for human consumption” do not stop a product from being a drug when the evidence shows it is meant for people2324. Health Canada says such labeling “does not make these products legal”, and an MHRA official told the Guardian that the UK regulator disregards “research purposes” claims used to get around medicines rules134136.
Will peptides fail a drug test?
In sport, they can: in February 2026, the US Anti-Doping Agency announced a 3-year ban for a masters weightlifter whose urine sample tested positive for ipamorelin167. WADA bans BPC-157, TB-500, thymosin beta-4, PEG-MGF, MOTS-c, AOD-9604, MK-677, CJC-1295, ipamorelin, sermorelin, tesamorelin, GHRP-2, GHRP-6 and hexarelin at all times, and gonadorelin and kisspeptin at all times for male athletes; its 2027 List keeps them banned2840. Semaglutide and tirzepatide are not banned; WADA monitors them2831. Unnamed peptides with no government approval for human use, such as retatrutide, may still fall under its catch-all ban on unapproved substances, S028. Pentadeca arginate, sold as an arginine salt of BPC-157, is not named either, but USADA has treated it as BPC-157: in 2024 a US athlete was banned for a year after taking a supplement labeled as containing BPC-157 arginate salt, which also contained DHEA, another banned substance54. Bremelanotide (PT-141) is not named, but it is approved in the US, so by our reading it falls outside S0 and is likely allowed2881.
