Best peptides for healing, ranked by the human evidence

5 compounds are sold for healing and injury recovery. We rank them by how strong the evidence in people is, not by popularity. None of them is an FDA-approved drug.

We found no controlled trial showing that any compound on this page heals a muscle, tendon or ligament injury in people23456. Thymosin beta-4 ranks first only because its human trials are the largest, and they tested eye drops for dry eye: two, in 601 and 700 adults, showed no clear benefit78. The only placebo-controlled trial of BPC-157 in patients that FDA found, in 53 people with the bowel disease ulcerative colitis, showed no clear benefit, and the published studies FDA found gave it to fewer than 100 people2. FDA found no study that gave TB-500, a lab-made piece of thymosin beta-4, to people at all3. We found no published study in people of pentadeca arginate, sold as a more stable salt of BPC-157; the only data we found are lab and animal results in a 2017 patent5910. Healing claims for BPC-157 and thymosin beta-4 rest on animal and cell studies, while FDA said animal and cell evidence that TB-500 promotes wound healing is lacking31112. For PEG-MGF, sold for muscle repair, we found no study in people or animals at all61314.

In July 2026, an FDA advisory committee voted 8 to 6, with one abstention, to recommend letting pharmacies make BPC-157, and by the same count TB-500, against the advice of FDA staff; the votes are only advice, and FDA had not acted on them by 8 October 202615161718. The other three were not on that meeting’s agenda16. FDA treats thymosin beta-4 as a biological product, which pharmacies may not compound, and its review of BPC-157 covered the free base and the acetate salt, not the arginine salt sold as pentadeca arginate21619. FDA plans to ask its advisers about PEG-MGF at a meeting before the end of February 202720. Many samples sent for testing fail: Finnrick, a testing service, failed 92 of its latest 200 BPC-157 samples (27 May to 25 September 2026) and 113 of its latest 200 TB-500 samples (29 January to 25 September 2026), and it had published no tests of the other three21222324. People choose which samples to send, so the results are not a random survey25.

  1. Thymosin beta-4

    AUntestedNot approved for any use

Thymosin beta-4 is a natural protein sold for injury recovery, often confused with TB-500, a lab-made piece of it326. We found no trial of it on muscle or tendon injuries, and two large dry-eye trials found no clear benefit478272829.

Does it work for tendon, ligament and muscle healing? We found no trial of it on tendon, ligament or muscle injuries427. Its large trials tested eye drops for dry eye and showed no clear benefit782829.

  2. BPC-157

    BUntestedNot approved for any use

BPC-157 is a lab-made peptide sold for tendon, joint and gut healing. It is not approved anywhere, and the only placebo-controlled trial in patients that FDA found showed no clear benefit2.

Does it work for tendon and joint healing? FDA found no controlled human trial of it for tendons or joints; those claims rest on animal studies211. The only controlled trial in patients that FDA found, for a bowel disease, showed no clear benefit2.

  3. Pentadeca arginate (PDA)

    DUntestedNot approved for any use

Pentadeca arginate (PDA) is sold by clinics and pharmacies as a more stable salt of BPC-157, made with the amino acid arginine93031. We found no published study of it in people; only a patent reports lab and animal tests510.

Does it work for tendon and joint healing? We found no published study of it in people for any use532. Healing claims rest on a 2017 patent that reports no healing figures and on BPC-157 studies that did not name the salt210.

  4. TB-500

    DUntestedNot approved for any use

TB-500 is a lab-made piece of the body protein thymosin beta-4, sold online for injury recovery. FDA found no study that gave it to people and no animal safety studies3.

Does it work for tendon, ligament, muscle and bone healing? Neither FDA’s review nor our PubMed search found a study in people333. Healing claims rest on a few animal and cell studies with mixed results; the tendon study called its peptide synthetic thymosin beta-433435.

  5. PEG-MGF

    EUntestedNot approved for any use

PEG-MGF is sold online as a longer-lasting version of MGF, a lab-made peptide copied from part of a growth factor that muscles switch on when stretched363738. We found no published study of PEG-MGF itself in people or animals613.

Does it work for muscle repair and growth? We found no study of it in people or animals61339. Animal studies of MGF without PEG reported some repair benefits, but drug-company scientists found no apparent effect on muscle cells404142.

How we ranked them

Compounds that trials show work for this goal come first, then those with mixed results, then those with no controlled human trial for this goal that has public results, and last those that trials found do not work. Within each group, the stronger the human evidence (tier A to E), the higher the place. Ties go to compounds FDA has approved as a medicine, then to those approved only in other countries, then to those whose US approval was withdrawn, then to peptides over non-peptide drugs, then to the winner of a trial that compared the two directly. Popularity, price and how a product is marketed play no part. A high place is not a recommendation to use anything.

Questions people ask

What is the peptide that heals the body?

BPC-157, whose initials stand for “body protection compound”, is sold for tendon, joint and gut healing, but the only placebo-controlled trial in patients that FDA found, for a bowel disease, showed no clear benefit211. TB-500 and thymosin beta-4, the natural protein it copies part of, are sold for injury recovery, but FDA found no study that gave TB-500 to people, and the trials of thymosin beta-4 we found tested eye drops, skin gels and IV doses, not muscle, tendon or ligament injuries3427. Healing claims for BPC-157 and thymosin beta-4 rest on animal and cell studies, while FDA said animal and cell evidence that TB-500 promotes wound healing is lacking31112.

How long does BPC-157 take to heal?

No one knows: we found no controlled trial in people testing it for tendon or joint healing, and those claims rest on animal studies211. In a review of clinic records with no comparison group, 14 of 16 knee-pain patients, 4 of whom also got thymosin beta-4, said by phone that their pain had eased, most of them 6 months to 1 year after the injection243. A registered trial in people recovering from rotator cuff surgery is not due to start until January 202744.

Are healing peptides safe?

Mostly unknown: the published studies FDA found gave BPC-157 to fewer than 100 people, for 2 weeks or less, and FDA found no human safety data for TB-500 or PEG-MGF2339. Thymosin beta-4 has more: in short trials of IV doses and eye drops, serious side effects were rare and about as common as on placebo, but we found no registered trial of injections under the skin or into muscle4784546. FDA warns that injected peptides can trigger immune reactions that range from symptom-free to life-threatening, and in 28-day studies in rats and dogs it saw possible signs that BPC-157 altered blood clotting and raised liver-related blood markers23947.

What peptides does Joe Rogan take?

He has said he used BPC-157: an Associated Press report in November 2025 quoted him telling his podcast audience the year before, “I had tendonitis in my elbow, I started using BPC-157 and it was gone in two weeks”1. One person’s recovery cannot show what caused it, and neither FDA’s 2026 review nor a 2025 review of 36 studies found a controlled trial of BPC-157 for tendon problems in people211.
