Mazdutide dosage: what studies actually used
The short answer
China’s National Medical Products Administration (NMPA) approved mazdutide in 2025 for weight management and for type 2 diabetes, at 4 mg and 6 mg once a week123. As of 7 October 2026, no dose is approved in the US, where Lilly’s trials have tested up to 16 mg once a week456. This page reports those doses and is not dosing advice. Vials sold online are another matter: of the 29 mazdutide tests Finnrick listed from April to November 2025, 11 failed7.
Not dosing advice. This page reports doses that studies and approved labels used, with their sources. It does not recommend a dose, and we do not give mixing, injection or unit-conversion instructions. Gray-market vials often do not contain what their label says. How we report doses.

Weight fell 4.81%, 6.40% and 6.05% by week 12, versus a 0.60% gain on placebo; no one stopped treatment for safety reasons, and there were no serious side effects14. |
| US phase 1 trial (Bhattachar 2025), randomized trial | US adults with overweight or obesity, without diabetes | 32 | 16 mg once a week, reached by two different step-up plans Injection under the skin · 20 weeks |
Weight fell 20.0% and 21.0% with the two plans, versus 0.1% on placebo; pulse rose by at least 10 beats a minute at two visits in a row in 91.7% versus 37.5%6. |
Studies, animals and users: kept apart
Doses below are what studies used or what a label says. They are not advice, and gray-market products may not contain what their label says.
In human studies
No dose is approved in the US. In China, the approved doses are 4 mg and 6 mg once weekly3, and a 9 mg dose was under review as of 25 August 202615. Trials used 4 mg or 6 mg weekly for 48 weeks in obesity9 and for 24 or 28 weeks in type 2 diabetes812, and 9 mg weekly for 60 weeks in obesity10, all injected under the skin. Lilly’s US trials tested weekly doses of up to 16 mg56.
In animal studies
Not summarized. Mazdutide has been tested directly in large human trials, so this entry does not rely on animal doses.

Half-life and how it is taken
- Half-life
- About 6 to 17 days14Range in a 12-week study in 36 Chinese adults with overweight or obesity, at doses up to 6 mg weekly (150.9 to 403.5 hours). A 12-week study in type 2 diabetes reported 6.1 to 28.1 days13.
- Routes
- Subcutaneous injection once weekly (approved in China; the only route in the human studies we found)
- No human data found for any other route
The approved doses in China
China’s NMPA approved mazdutide in June 2025 for long-term weight management in adults with an initial “BMI ≥ 28 kg/m² (obesity); or BMI ≥ 24 kg/m² (overweight) in the presence of at least one weight-related comorbid condition”, and in September 2025 for blood-sugar control in adults with type 2 diabetes1211. Innovent, Lilly’s partner for mazdutide in China, lists both approvals at 4 mg and 6 mg3. Macau’s drug regulator (ISAF) approved it for the same uses in October 2025 and January 20263.
Innovent describes its dose range as “2mg-4mg-6mg” for the broad overweight and obese population and “3 mg-6mg-9mg” for people with severe obesity16. We did not review the Chinese prescribing information, so this page does not give the length of each step.
The 9 mg dose is not yet approved15. In November 2025, the NMPA’s Center for Drug Evaluation accepted Innovent’s application for 9 mg in adults with moderate to severe obesity, based on GLORY-2, and on 25 August 2026 Innovent said it was still under review1516.
How trials raised the dose
Every trial raised the dose in steps, and the plans differed5614:
- Phase 1b in China: three 4-week steps, such as 2.0, 4.0 and then 6.0 mg in the 6.0 mg group14.
- US phase 2: people in the 3 to 6 mg group stayed on 3 mg from week 4 to week 32 before moving up to 6 mg5.
- US phase 1: two different step-up plans reached the same 16 mg target dose6.
- DREAMS-3: after 32 weeks, people on mazdutide continued for 24 more weeks at different doses, depending on whether they had reached the weight-loss target11.
What the higher doses add, and what they cost
In GLORY-1, weight fell 14.01% on 6 mg and 11.00% on 4 mg at 48 weeks, and few people stopped because of side effects on either dose (0.5% and 1.5%)9. On 9 mg in GLORY-2, vomiting affected 53.1%, nausea 46.9% and diarrhea 39.4% of people, versus 1.3%, 3.2% and 6.5% on placebo10. In the US phase 2 trial, 20% of people on 16 mg stopped because of side effects, mainly digestive ones5.
Why gray-market vials make doses unreliable
FDA says companies have illegally sold unapproved GLP-1 drugs, including mazdutide, falsely labeled “for research purposes”, directly to consumers18. As of 7 October 2026, FDA’s warning-letter database listed four letters naming mazdutide, dated from 10 December 2024 to 24 August 2026192021.
Finnrick, an independent testing service, listed 29 mazdutide tests dated 25 April to 25 November 2025: 18 passed and 11 failed, as displayed on 7 October 20267. Its pass mark allows the measured dose to differ from the label by up to 35%7.
Questions people ask
How much mazdutide should I take?
No dose is approved in the US4. In China, where mazdutide is approved, the doses are 4 mg and 6 mg once a week, and Lilly’s US trials tested up to 16 mg a week35. Ask your prescriber about approved options.
What doses of mazdutide are approved in China?
4 mg and 6 mg once a week3. The approvals cover long-term weight management in adults with obesity, or with overweight and at least one weight-related condition, and blood-sugar control in adults with type 2 diabetes12.
What is the highest dose of mazdutide tested?
Among the trials on this page, 16 mg once a week, in Lilly’s US phase 1 and phase 2 trials56. In the phase 2 trial, 20% of people on 16 mg stopped because of side effects5.
Is mazdutide 9 mg approved?
Not as of 25 August 2026, the latest update found, when Innovent said its application for the 9 mg dose for adult weight management was still under review in China15. In GLORY-2, the trial behind the application, 9 mg once a week cut weight by 16.65% at 60 weeks, versus 1.50% on placebo1016.
