Research peptides in 2026: inside the gray-market boom

US searches for “peptides” overtook “ozempic” in February 20261. Since then, FDA’s advisers have met and voted, but pharmacies still may not make most of the popular research peptides58. Testers keep finding mislabeled vials, and more people report harm242528.

The short version

  • US pharmacies are not allowed to make popular “research” peptides such as BPC-157, TB-500, KPV, MOTS-c, CJC-1295 and ipamorelin56.
  • In July 2026, a panel of FDA advisers voted in favor of letting pharmacies make six peptides, including BPC-157, TB-500 and MOTS-c910. The vote is only advice, and FDA had not acted on it by 8 October 20265842.
  • In August 2026, FDA sent warning letters to peptide sellers. It said the sellers’ own websites, including a “peptide calculator”, a “peptide guide” and comparison posts, showed that the “research use only” vials were really sold for people111213.
  • In Finnrick’s tests of samples that consumers bought and sent in, 30% to 38% of retatrutide, tirzepatide and semaglutide samples failed its grading, and almost half of BPC-157 samples did, by our calculation from its latest results32346474849.
  • More people are reporting harm2628, and an NBC News investigation found that, in many cases, no one is tracking the risks39.

How big it is

In our Google Trends pull of 30 September 2026, US searches for “peptides” beat searches for “ozempic” every week from the week of 15 February 2026 to the week of 20 September 2026. Interest peaked in the week of 12 April 2026 and had fallen to about half that peak by 20 September 2026. Part of it is collagen and skincare interest, not injectables1.

On 30 September 2026, by our reading of Reddit’s community pages, r/Retatrutide, a forum about a drug that is approved nowhere, had 160,567 weekly visitors, more than three times as many as r/Ozempic (51,311)22150.

Finnrick, a US testing service, says buyers filed more than 21,000 test requests in the first year of its free testing service3. By our count from the chart data on its page, retatrutide made up 34.6% of the 21,253 requests charted from May 2025 to May 2026 and tirzepatide 23.4%; Finnrick puts GLP-1 drugs as a group at 63% of all requests3. Chainalysis estimated in June 2026 that crypto payments to gray-market peptide vendors had passed a $100 million annual run rate, counting on-chain crypto payments only4. WIRED, citing Bloomberg News, reported investor estimates that the booming peptide ecosystem is already worth up to $3 billion25.

What “research use only” means in law

Sellers call these products research peptides, and the vials are often labeled “research use only” or “not for human consumption”111233. FDA’s August 2026 letter to one seller lists products named “GLP-1 Sema Research Peptide” and “Tesamorelin Research Peptide” and calls them unapproved new drugs12. US drug law looks at what the seller’s own marketing shows a product is for, not only at a disclaimer on its label11.

On 24 August 2026 FDA sent warning letters to several peptide sellers. The letters cite a “peptide calculator”, a “peptide guide”, blog-style “tirzepatide vs retatrutide” comparisons, hedged research summaries on product pages, and sales of bacteriostatic water as evidence that the products were drugs meant for people111213. Four of the letters list SS-31, the research code for elamipretide, which FDA approved in 2025 only as Forzinity, a prescription injection for a rare disease; FDA called the sellers’ SS-31 an unapproved new drug1113515253. By our count from keyword searches of FDA’s warning-letter database, FDA sent about 10 GLP-1-related warning letters dated 2024, about 70 dated 2025 and about 75 dated 2026 that it had posted by 8 October 202637.

Prosecutors have also won convictions and prison terms. On 30 July 2026 they announced a 70-month sentence for the owner of Paradigm Peptides14. On 18 September 2026 a jury convicted one of the two people who ran Pinned Aminos; prosecutors say customers received “directions on dosage” by email and in a Facebook group despite research-only disclaimers1540. The other had pleaded guilty and was sentenced on 13 August 2026 to three years’ probation15. On 23 July 2026 prosecutors announced a 21-month sentence for a Michigan man who sold semaglutide and tirzepatide through websites that called them “for research purposes only”16.

What is actually in the vials

By our calculation from the pass and fail counts on Finnrick’s product pages, 32.5% of retatrutide, 30.1% of tirzepatide, 37.8% of semaglutide and 46.5% of BPC-157 samples failed its grading among the latest 200 public tests of each (incomplete tests left out; as of 30 September 2026)2346474849. Finnrick tests samples that consumers bought and chose to send, so these are not a random sample of the market3.

A testing lab, Leeder Analytical, told ABC News in Australia that only one of the 18 samples sold as retatrutide that it had tested in 2026 matched its label; of three vials it tested for ABC and the University of Queensland, two held much more than their labels stated (reported 28 August 2026)24. WIRED bought four vials at a Brooklyn bodega, labeled PT-141, BPC-157, NAD+ and retatrutide. Testing found that none contained its labeled active ingredient (reported 15 September 2026)25.

Harms reported so far

  • Victoria, Australia, warned on 19 June 2026 of acute liver injury linked to products labeled retatrutide. Six cases were known then; a seventh was reported by 24 August 20262627.
  • ABC News reported on 14 September 2026 that Australia’s regulator had warned again after a patient suffered a torn esophagus while using a product sold as retatrutide; the regulator tested a sample in its original unmarked vial and found undeclared semaglutide and no retatrutide3854.
  • Reuters reported on 16 September 2026 that FDA’s adverse-event system held 10 serious reports involving BPC-157 since 2021, eight of them from 2026. Reports do not prove that the product caused the harm28.
  • In July 2025 two women became critically ill after peptide injections at a longevity festival in Las Vegas29.
  • In July 2026 a 27-year-old woman died after an NAD+ injection at a lifestyle center in the Bronx30. On 6 October 2026 CBS News reported that the medical examiner had ruled her death a homicide, caused by air let into an IV line during the procedure, and that the man who gave the injection, licensed in the US only as an esthetician, had been indicted on charges including murder; his lawyer called it an accident44. NAD+ is not a peptide55.
  • On 30 June 2026 the Daily Mail reported 77 UK Yellow Card reports of suspected reactions to retatrutide since 2025, including one death. This is a press account of regulator data31.
  • An NBC News investigation of how US states monitor problems linked to peptides found a patchwork of oversight policies (reported 27 August 2026)39.

Outside the US

  • United Kingdom: the MHRA has said it disregards “research purposes” claims used to get around medicines rules (reported 4 April 2026)32.
  • Canada: Health Canada said on 9 April 2026 that research-use-only labeling “does not make these products legal”33.
  • Australia: the Poisons Standard in force from 1 October 2026 lists BPC-157, TB-500, CJC-1295, ipamorelin, GHRPs, AOD-9604 and others in Appendix D, clause 5, which makes possessing them without authority illegal34.
  • Sport: WADA’s 2027 Prohibited List, published 21 September 2026 and in force from 1 January 2027, keeps BPC-157 banned under S0 and adds the word “peptides” to that section. TB-500, CJC-1295, ipamorelin and GHRPs stay banned under S23536.

Dates to watch

  • Any time: FDA minutes, a proposed rule or an enforcement notice after the July 2026 committee vote. None had appeared by 8 October 20265842.
  • 1 January 2027: the WADA 2027 Prohibited List takes effect35.
  • Q1 2027: Lilly’s planned filing for retatrutide22.
  • Before the end of February 2027: the committee’s review of GHK-Cu, melanotan II, LL-37, dihexa and PEG-MGF545.
  • Not yet scheduled as of 21 September 2026: sentencing of the Pinned Aminos defendant convicted at trial15.
