Epitalon

Epithalon (common vendor spelling) · Epithalone · AEDG peptide · Ala-Glu-Asp-Gly · Epitalon acetate (salt form)

Epitalon is a lab-made peptide of four amino acids, sold for longevity, telomeres and sleep1. Most of its research comes from one Russian group, and we found no controlled trial testing whether it slows aging in people12.

Quick answers

What is it?
A lab-made chain of four amino acids13. A team in Saint Petersburg, Russia, designed it from the makeup of epithalamin, an extract of calf pineal glands, which is a different product14. It is sold for longevity, telomeres and sleep1.
Does it work?
Not shown. In the one placebo-controlled trial FDA found, 20 women using an under-the-tongue spray for 20 days had more of a urine melatonin marker15. We found no controlled trial that measured sleep, telomeres or lifespan1.
Is it safe?
Unknown. FDA found no study of its safety in people1. In cell studies it switches on telomerase, an enzyme that lets cells keep dividing6. FDA warns that long-term use could, in theory, raise cancer risk1.
Is it legal?
Not approved, and US pharmacies may not make it17. In July 2026, FDA’s advisers voted 7 to 4 to let pharmacies make it; FDA had not acted by 5 October 202689. Likely banned in sport under a catch-all rule1011.
What is in the vials?
Testing is sparse. Of 8 samples tested in 2026 by Finnrick, an independent testing service, 2 passed, 4 failed and 2 were incomplete12. Sellers label vials ‘for research use only’, which Health Canada says does not make them legal113.

What it is

Epitalon, also spelled epithalon, is a lab-made peptide of four amino acids: alanine, glutamic acid, aspartic acid and glycine (Ala-Glu-Asp-Gly, or AEDG)13. Its developers built it from the amino-acid makeup of epithalamin, a peptide extract of calf pineal glands, and in 2017 reported finding AEDG itself in that extract14. The pineal gland is a small gland in the brain that makes melatonin, the hormone that signals night to the body. FDA treats epitalon and epithalamin as different substances1. How epitalon works is not known114. In lab dishes it switched on telomerase, the enzyme that rebuilds telomeres (the protective caps on the ends of chromosomes), and lengthened telomeres in human fetal lung cells16. A 2025 study from a UK university found the same in normal human cells, but in breast-cancer cells it lengthened telomeres by a different route, called ALT15. In old female rhesus monkeys, 10 days of injections raised evening melatonin more than 4-fold and had no effect on melatonin in young monkeys116. In a Paris study that Khavinson co-authored, it did not change melatonin release from young or old rat pineal glands in a dish17.

Epitalon comes from Vladimir Khavinson’s group in Saint Petersburg, Russia, which, with Vladimir Anisimov, has studied the pineal extract epithalamin since the 1970s114. FDA’s 2026 review says epitalon was first made in 1999 because the calf pineal glands needed for epithalamin were scarce, but another passage of the same review says the late 1980s1. Khavinson’s patent on the peptide claims a Russian priority date of 11 May 1999; the US patent was granted on 27 April 2004 and is listed as expired for unpaid fees18. BioDiem Ltd, an Australian company, held a US orphan-drug designation for epitalon in retinitis pigmentosa, an inherited disease that destroys the retina, from 2 September 2010 until it was withdrawn or revoked on 6 January 201619. Wells Pharmacy Network and LDT Health Solutions, for the International Peptide Society, later nominated it for FDA’s compounding list and then withdrew their nominations1.

Benefits: what the research shows

The human evidence is thin and comes almost entirely from Khavinson’s network. FDA’s 2026 review found only three human studies of epitalon1. The best is a randomized, placebo-controlled trial in healthy women aged 40 to 50 who mostly worked night shifts. The 40 women with low output of a urine melatonin marker (6-sulfatoxymelatonin) used an under-the-tongue spray of epitalon (0.5 mg a day) or a saltwater placebo, 20 per group, for 20 days. The marker rose 1.7-fold on epitalon, to the level of a 35-woman reference group, and did not change on placebo; readings of three clock genes in blood cells also shifted15. FDA noted that the paper did not say whether anyone was blinded, did not measure sleep and was small and short1. In a 2002 trial in retinitis pigmentosa, the authors reported a positive clinical effect in 90% of cases20. A 2025 review says 162 patients took part. Treated patients got 5 µg per eye by injection around the eyeball for 10 days, a control group got conventional treatment, and no treated patient reported side effects14. A 2007 paper in Russian reported that epitalon and epithalamin restored night-time melatonin in older people with weak pineal function21. A review cited by FDA says these pineal peptides had no effect in young people or in older people with normal pineal function1. The developer’s patent adds two small uncontrolled case series (25 patients) with better blood antioxidant markers and more melatonin output after 10 days of injections18. We found no study that gave epitalon to people and measured telomeres or lifespan, and no controlled trial that measured sleep quality or age-related disease1. The often-cited study of 266 older people with lower death rates over 6 to 8 years used epithalamin and a thymus extract, not epitalon22. When the developers exposed blood cells from 11 men to epitalon in a dish, telomeres got longer in 5 and shorter in 223. Animal results are mixed and come almost entirely from the same group. In female CBA mice given injections 5 days a month from 6 months of age, mean survival rose 5.3% and tumors, mainly in the lung, were fewer24. Female SHR mice got a 10-fold higher dose on a similar schedule. Their mean lifespan, food intake, body weight and total tumor rates did not change25. But the longest-lived 10% lived 13.3% longer, and leukemia was 6 times less common25. In mice bred to develop breast cancer, it reduced the number and size of tumors26. Fruit flies exposed as larvae lived 11% to 16% longer, with no link to dose27. FDA judged the mouse studies too limited to settle safety or cancer risk. Each used one fixed dose and only female mice, with at most about 22 weeks of total exposure, and FDA found no 2-year cancer study1. FDA wrote that most pharmacological studies of epitalon were conducted and published by Khavinson’s group1, and a 2026 review said it lacks independent Western validation2. Studies from Israel and Italy list Anisimov or Khavinson as co-authors2829. Outside the former Soviet Union, we found only four studies that did not involve Khavinson or Anisimov. Three were lab studies of human cells in the UK and of mouse and cow egg cells in China and South Korea153031. The fourth was a Belgian lab report of epitalon in illegal products32. No trial of epitalon was registered on ClinicalTrials.gov as of 5 October 202633.

Doses studied

Doses below are what studies used or what a label says. They are not advice, and gray-market products may not contain what their label says.

In human studies

All published human dosing comes from Khavinson’s network. Under the tongue: 0.5 mg a day as a spray for 20 days, in the one placebo-controlled trial15. Around the eyeball: 5 µg per eye a day for 10 days, in retinitis pigmentosa14. Into muscle: 10 µg a day for 10 days, in two small uncontrolled case series; the patent proposes 0.01 to 100 µg/kg a day for 10 to 40 days18. FDA found no human study of injections under the skin, the route proposed to FDA and common online, at any dose1.

In animal studies

As reported. Mice: 0.1 µg or 1 µg per mouse by injection under the skin on 5 days in a row each month242526. Dosing started at 2 to 6 months of age and went on for life or until the study ended; FDA estimated the doses at about 3 to 4 and 30 to 40 µg/kg a day1242526. Rhesus monkeys: 2 µg/kg a day by injection into muscle for 10 days116. Rats, in the developer’s patent (not peer reviewed): 1 µg/kg to 3 mg/kg a day into muscle for 90 days, and 1 µg/kg to 1 mg/kg a day for 6 months, with no reported harm18. Mice: single doses of up to 5 mg/kg into muscle caused no acute toxic reactions, the patent says18. Fruit flies: added to the food of developing larvae27. These are animal doses, not human doses.

What users report Anecdotal · not validated · not a recommendation

One community reference site lists 2 mg a day39. Clinic websites reviewed by FDA described 5 to 10 mg a day, by injection or by mouth1.

Half-life
Not known1FDA found no data on how epitalon is absorbed or cleared in people1. The only distribution data FDA found come from one study of fluorescent-labeled epitalon in pregnant rabbits, and FDA said the signal may not have been epitalon itself1. A 2025 review notes that short peptides like epitalon usually break down quickly in the body14.
Routes
  • Injection under the skin (the route proposed to FDA and the usual gray-market route; no human data found)
  • Spray under the tongue (the one placebo-controlled human trial, 0.5 mg a day for 20 days)
  • Injection into muscle (two small uncontrolled case series in the developer’s patent; Russian monkey and rat studies)
  • Injection around the eyeball (one Russian trial in retinitis pigmentosa)
  • Capsules and oral sprays (sold online and by clinics; no human data found)

Quality and the gray market

What testing finds

Independent data are sparse. Finnrick, an independent testing service, reported 8 tests of gray-market epitalon (sold as Epithalon) from 3 vendors between 20 February 2026 and 24 September 2026. Under its standard of at least 99.5% purity and content within 35% of the label, 2 passed, 4 failed and 2 were incomplete. Three of the 4 failures came from one vendor12. FDA found that published certificates of analysis for the free base report purity only1. The one submitted for the acetate salt gave no results for individual impurities, clumping (aggregation), microbes or bacterial endotoxin1. FDA also noted that ‘epitalon’ is a common name, not an official US drug name. It said it has seen different salts and derivatives, even different active molecules, sold under one common name for similar products, and that the free base dissolves poorly in water1. In 2015, Belgian public-health scientists reported epitalon in two illegal pharmaceutical preparations32.

How it is sold

Epitalon is sold online as freeze-dried powder in vials, often spelled Epithalon, and as capsules and oral sprays. FDA found vials of 10, 20, 25 and 50 mg, 3 mg and 3.3 mg capsules and an oral spray, with several sellers saying the products are for research use only1. One online vendor listed a 25 mg vial for $90 on 5 October 2026, with lower prices for larger orders, and said its peptides are ‘not for human consumption’40. The same page credited epitalon with the lower death rates of a study that actually used epithalamin2240. Wellness clinics and concierge practices market it as an anti-aging treatment, some calling it ‘the fountain of youth’. Some say they get it from compounding pharmacies, but FDA could not find any pharmacy that makes it1. Demand looks small next to other peptides. Finnrick logged 8 epitalon tests from February to September 202612. Longevity products made up about 2% of roughly 21,275 requests to its free testing service from February 2025 to May 2026, and epitalon was not among the top products it named41. The two dedicated subreddits had 8 (r/epitalon) and 6 (r/Epithalon) weekly visitors on 5 October 20264243. Health Canada has seized epitalon products13, and a Kentucky compounding pharmacy that pleaded guilty in 2020 had sold it37.

Side effects and risks

  • Unknown human safety: FDA found no study of epitalon’s safety in people and no standard animal toxicity studies. The developer’s patent describes rat tests of up to 6 months with no reported harm, but FDA’s review did not identify them118.
  • Theoretical cancer risk: epitalon switches on telomerase and lengthens telomeres in cell studies, and long telomeres are linked to higher cancer risk. FDA says that, mechanistically, it ‘has the potential to be carcinogenic’ with continuous long-term use, and that the mouse tumor studies were too short and narrow to rule this out16. In a 2025 UK study it also lengthened telomeres in breast-cancer cells15.
  • Immune reactions: FDA says injected epitalon may cause unwanted immune responses (immunogenicity) because of clumping and peptide-related impurities134.
  • Product quality: in Finnrick’s small 2026 sample, 4 of 8 gray-market tests failed and 2 were incomplete12. Certificates of analysis for both forms leave out key safety tests, and FDA warns that common names like ‘epitalon’ can cover different molecules1.
  • Missing reports: FDA’s adverse event database had no epitalon reports through 8 December 2025, and its food and supplement complaint system had none through 5 December 20251. FDA notes that reporting is voluntary and that it does not receive all reports, especially for compounded products, so no reports does not mean no harm1.
  • Anti-doping: not named on WADA’s List, but by our reading it falls under class S0 (non-approved substances), which is banned at all times1011. WADA warns that unnamed peptides ‘may still be prohibited’35.
  • Legal: US pharmacies have no lawful 503A route to compound it, a Kentucky pharmacy pleaded guilty in 2020 to distributing unapproved drugs including epitalon, and Health Canada has seized epitalon products71337.

Questions people ask

Is epitalon FDA approved?

No. No FDA-approved product contains epitalon, and US pharmacies have no lawful route to compound it17. FDA’s compounding advisers voted 7-4, with 1 abstention, to allow it on 24 July 2026, but the vote is advisory and FDA had not acted as of 5 October 202689.

Does epitalon lengthen telomeres in people?

Not shown. It lengthened telomeres in lab-dish studies of human cells615, but FDA found no human study that measured telomeres1. When its developers exposed blood cells from 11 men to it in a dish, telomeres got longer in 5 and shorter in 223.

Is epitalon the same as epithalamin?

No. Epithalamin is an extract of calf pineal glands; epitalon is a lab-made four-amino-acid peptide designed from its makeup, and FDA treats them as different substances14. The often-quoted study of 266 older people with lower death rates used epithalamin, not epitalon22.

Does epitalon help with sleep?

Not shown. FDA found no study of epitalon in people with insomnia and no animal study of sleep itself1. It raised a urine melatonin marker in one small trial in women with low melatonin output, but that trial did not measure sleep15.

Is epitalon banned in sport?

It is not named on WADA’s Prohibited List, but by our reading it falls under class S0, which bans substances with no government approval for human use at all times1011. WADA’s notes on the 2027 List warn that unnamed peptides ‘may still be prohibited’35.

Who has studied epitalon?

Mostly one group. FDA says most pharmacological studies come from Vladimir Khavinson’s group in Russia1, and a 2026 review said epitalon lacks independent Western validation2. Outside the former Soviet Union, the studies of its effects that we found without Khavinson or his colleague Vladimir Anisimov were all done on cells in a lab153031.

What is still unknown

  • Whether epitalon does anything for aging, telomeres, sleep or age-related disease in people; we found no controlled trial that measured these outcomes.
  • How the Ivko trial was randomized and whether it was blinded, and whether its participants overlap with a 2021 circadian-gene study by the same group in night-shift workers (Khavinson et al., World Heart Journal), which we could not open.
  • The full design of the 2002 retinitis pigmentosa trial (randomization, blinding, outcome measures); we read only the abstract and a 2025 review’s summary.
  • Whether epitalon is registered in Russia as a dietary supplement or a medicine; this was raised at FDA’s July 2026 advisory meeting, and Russia’s drug register could not be searched.
  • What FDA will decide after the 24 July 2026 advisory vote; as of 5 October 2026 no minutes, proposed rule or category change had been posted.
  • When epitalon was first made: FDA’s review gives both the late 1980s and 1999, and the patent’s priority date is 11 May 1999.
  • Whether the rat toxicity tests described in the 1999 patent (up to 6 months, up to 3 mg/kg a day) were ever published in full.
  • Whether long-term or continuous use raises cancer risk; no 2-year animal cancer study exists.
  • How long epitalon lasts in the body by any route; no human pharmacokinetic study exists.
  • Whether Finnrick’s small sample (8 tests from 3 vendors) reflects the wider market.
  • Legal status in the UK, Russia and EU countries beyond FDA’s product check, and how Australian law treats it beyond the Poisons Standard.
