Which peptide drugs are approved for women?
Several FDA-approved peptide drugs treat conditions in women; their labels, checked on 7 October 2026, state exactly who each is for12345612.
- Vyleesi (bremelanotide) was approved on 21 June 2019 for hypoactive sexual desire disorder (HSDD) in women before menopause: low sexual desire that developed after a time without problems, happens regardless of situation or partner, causes marked distress or interpersonal difficulty, and is not due to another medical or psychiatric condition, relationship problems, or a medicine or other drug1220. Its label says it is not for women after menopause, for men, or for enhancing sexual performance12.
- Forteo (teriparatide), a lab-made copy of the first 34 amino acids of parathyroid hormone, the body’s main regulator of calcium and phosphate in bone and kidney, is approved for women after menopause who have osteoporosis and a high risk of fracture, or for whom other osteoporosis treatments failed or were not tolerated; it is also approved for some men and for osteoporosis caused by long-term steroid medicines1. In its main trial, in 1,637 women after menopause, the share with new spinal fractures seen on X-rays fell from 14.3% on placebo to 5.0% on Forteo1.
- Tymlos (abaloparatide), a lab-made peptide of 34 amino acids modeled on a related hormone, parathyroid hormone-related peptide, is approved for the same purpose in women after menopause, and for some men2. In its main 18-month trial in women after menopause, 0.6% of those on Tymlos had a new spinal fracture, versus 4.2% on placebo2.
- Pitocin (oxytocin), a lab-made version of a nine-amino-acid hormone found in the pituitary gland, is approved to start labor when there is a medical reason, to strengthen labor, and to control bleeding after birth3. Its label says that to start or strengthen labor it should be given only as an IV drip into a vein, under medical supervision in a hospital, and that it is not for elective induction, meaning starting labor without a medical reason3.
- Lupron Depot 3.75 mg (leuprolide) is a lab-made nine-amino-acid peptide modeled on gonadotropin-releasing hormone (GnRH), the brain hormone that makes the pituitary gland release the reproductive hormones luteinizing hormone (LH) and follicle-stimulating hormone (FSH)421. It lowers estrogen and is approved to manage endometriosis, including pain and its lesions, and, with iron, to improve blood counts before surgery in women with anemia caused by fibroids4.
- Ganirelix and Cetrotide (cetrorelix), lab-made ten-amino-acid peptides that block GnRH, are approved for women having controlled ovarian stimulation in fertility treatment, to stop a premature LH surge, the signal that sets off ovulation56.
- Wegovy (semaglutide) and Zepbound (tirzepatide) are approved for long-term weight management in adults, and Wegovy injection also in children aged 12 and older with obesity; neither approval is limited to women1314.
Online sellers also offer peptides that are not approved for any use, such as kisspeptin-10 and melanotan II171821. ‘PT-141’ vials count as unapproved drugs in FDA’s view, even though the same molecule, bremelanotide, is approved as Vyleesi1219.
Do weight-loss peptides work as well for women?
Women made up most of the volunteers in the main weight-loss trials of Wegovy and Zepbound: 74% of the 1,961 adults in Wegovy’s 68-week trial and 68% of the 2,539 adults in Zepbound’s first 72-week trial were women1314.
On average, semaglutide cut body weight by 14.9% over 68 weeks, versus 2.4% on placebo, and tirzepatide’s highest dose by 20.9% over 72 weeks, versus 3.1%2223. Both labels say weight fell regardless of sex, and neither found a meaningful difference by sex in how the body absorbs and clears the drug1314.
Women were a minority in Wegovy’s heart trial: 72% of its 17,604 adults were men, and the label says the drop in major heart events (death from heart or blood vessel disease, non-fatal heart attack or non-fatal stroke) was not affected by sex13.
Does menopause change the result? A post hoc analysis, one done after the trials ended, grouped 2,542 women from three tirzepatide trials by reproductive stage, mostly by age alone, because the trials had not been required to record reproductive stage7. In the first trial, 97% to 98% of women in every stage group on the highest dose lost at least 5% of their body weight, versus 29% to 33% on placebo7. One additional analysis of that trial found 0.22% more weight reduction in women before menopause than after it, a difference not seen in the other two trials7. Eli Lilly, which makes tirzepatide, funded the analysis, and eight of its authors are Lilly employees and shareholders714.
These results apply only to the approved drugs that were tested: we found no published trial of research-labeled or compounded tirzepatide, for example. A registered study with groups taking compounded tirzepatide had not started recruiting on 8 October 202624. Our weight-loss ranking compares the evidence for each weight-loss peptide, and our semaglutide and tirzepatide comparison sets those two side by side.
What do labels say about pregnancy, breastfeeding and birth control?
The labels for Wegovy and Zepbound both say weight loss offers no benefit to a pregnant patient and may cause fetal harm, and that data from pregnant women are too few to judge the risk of birth defects or miscarriage1314. Zepbound’s label says to stop the drug when a pregnancy is recognized, as does Wegovy’s for people using it for weight loss or heart-risk reduction1314. Wegovy’s adds that it should be stopped at least 2 months before a planned pregnancy, because semaglutide takes a long time to leave the body13.
Other approved peptides carry their own pregnancy warnings124561225.
- Vyleesi’s label advises effective birth control while taking it and stopping if pregnancy is suspected; in animal studies, it harmed the fetus in dogs12.
- Lupron Depot 3.75 mg’s label rules out use in pregnancy and calls for non-hormonal birth control only during treatment4.
- Forteo’s label says there are no data from pregnant women, that stopping should be considered when a pregnancy is recognized, and that it should be avoided while breastfeeding1. Tymlos’s label says it is not meant for women who can still become pregnant2.
- The ganirelix and Cetrotide labels rule out use in known or suspected pregnancy, and Cetrotide’s also while breastfeeding56.
- The label for Egrifta WR (tesamorelin), approved to reduce excess belly fat in adults with HIV, rules out use in pregnancy25.
Labels say little about breastfeeding. The labels of injected semaglutide and of bremelanotide say there are no data on whether the drug passes into human milk or affects the baby, and Wegovy’s label advises against breastfeeding during treatment with Wegovy tablets, because SNAC, an ingredient that helps the tablet be absorbed, or its breakdown products pass into milk1213. In a single-dose study in 11 breastfeeding women, tirzepatide was undetectable in 164 of 171 milk samples, but its label says there are no data on its effects on the baby or on milk production14.
Tirzepatide may make birth control pills less effective, because it slows stomach emptying; the delay is largest after the first dose and fades over time14. In a study described on Zepbound’s label, after one dose of tirzepatide, overall blood levels of ethinyl estradiol, one of the two active ingredients of the combined pill tested, were 20% lower, and its peak level was 59% lower14. Zepbound’s label tells prescribers to advise women on the pill to switch to a non-oral method, or add a barrier method, for 4 weeks after starting and after each dose increase, and says hormonal methods not taken by mouth should not be affected14. Wegovy’s label carries no birth-control warning, and in interaction studies it describes for semaglutide tablets, levels of ethinyl estradiol and levonorgestrel, two hormones used in birth control pills, did not change meaningfully1013.
For unapproved peptides, pregnancy data are thin or missing: FDA found no published studies of kisspeptin-10’s effects on fertility or pregnancy, and says ipamorelin may harm reproductive health and pregnancy outcomes, though it found no animal studies testing ipamorelin itself for such harm2126. In Russia, where Semax and Selank are registered as nasal drops, their labels rule out use in pregnancy and breastfeeding272829.
What about skin, hair and tanning?
Both weight-loss labels report hair loss more often in women than in men, and link it to weight loss1314. In Zepbound’s two main trials, 7.1% of women and 0.5% of men on the drug reported hair loss, versus 1.3% of women and no men on placebo14. With Wegovy injections, 4% of women and 0.9% of men reported it, versus 2% of women and no men on placebo13. Our guide to peptides for hair covers hair loss on these drugs and the evidence for peptide hair products.
Vyleesi can darken patches of skin, including on the face, gums and breasts: this happened in 1% of women using up to 8 doses a month in its main trials, but in 38% of people given it daily for 8 days in another study12. People with dark skin were more likely to be affected, and the darkening did not clear in everyone after stopping12.
Peptides sold for skin and tanning without approval, such as GHK-Cu, glutathione and melanotan II, have much thinner evidence, and none is an FDA-approved drug15161730. Our ranking of peptides for skin and tanning sets out what their trials found. Our guides to peptides in skincare and collagen peptides cover creams and supplements.
Case reports of melanoma after melanotan II use include two young women: a 20-year-old in Denmark who injected it to boost sunbed tanning, and a 22-year-old in the UK who used it as a nasal spray and developed melanoma of the mouth lining; a causal link is not proven313233.
Are there peptides for libido, fertility or menopause?
Vyleesi is approved for one kind of low sexual desire in women before menopause, and its effect is modest1234. In two large trials, measured from each woman’s start to her last visit, desire scores rose 0.30 and 0.42 points more than with placebo on a scale from 1.2 to 6, and distress about low desire fell 0.37 and 0.29 points more on a scale from 0 to 4, but the number of satisfying sexual events did not differ from placebo34. Among women whose answer was recorded, about 58% on the drug and 36% on placebo rated it as beneficial34.
Kisspeptin, a natural hormone that switches on the reproductive system, is marketed by clinics, med spas and websites, most often for weight loss and fertility, but it is not approved for any use21. In 32 women before menopause with HSDD, one 75-minute IV drip of kisspeptin-54 changed brain responses to erotic videos and attractive faces compared with placebo; the trial measured brain activity, not desire or sex at home35. Sellers mostly offer a shorter form, kisspeptin-10, which did not raise reproductive hormones in the first half of the menstrual cycle, even at high doses, but did just before ovulation213637. Our libido ranking grades the evidence for each libido peptide.
Beyond the approved fertility drugs ganirelix and Cetrotide, described above, researchers have tested kisspeptin-54 as a trigger for the final maturing of eggs in in vitro fertilization (IVF), though it is not approved for this or any use5621. In one study, a single injection led to egg maturation in 95% of 60 women at high risk of ovarian hyperstimulation syndrome, a known complication of IVF, with live births after 45% of embryo transfers3839. In a 62-woman trial, a second dose raised the share with a good egg yield from 45% to 71%, and the authors called for trials against standard IVF triggers39. In women whose periods had stopped because the brain’s reproductive signal was weak, twice-daily kisspeptin-54 injections lost most of their effect within 2 weeks40.
For menopause symptoms such as hot flashes, we found no approved peptide, as of 7 October 202689. FDA’s menopause page, current as of 14 December 2023, lists hormone therapy (estrogen, or estrogen with progestin) and four approved non-hormonal medicines, for hot flashes, osteoporosis and painful sex after menopause; we found no peptide among them8. Lynkuet (elinzanetant), approved in 2025, after that page was last updated, treats moderate to severe vasomotor symptoms due to menopause, the sudden feelings of heat and sweating known as hot flashes89. It is a capsule taken by mouth that blocks two nerve-signal receptors, NK1 and NK3, on nerve cells named for kisspeptin and two other signals; it is not itself a peptide9.
Some peptide drugs cause menopause-like symptoms instead: hot flashes and sweats are among the most common side effects of Lupron Depot 3.75 mg, which lowers estrogen4. Forteo and Tymlos treat osteoporosis after menopause, not menopause symptoms12.
Are the risks different for women?
Labels and trials report a few risks that concern women in particular, besides the hair loss described above1241213.
- Hip and pelvis fractures: in Wegovy’s heart trial, these were more common in women on Wegovy than on placebo, 1% (24 of 2,448) versus 0.2% (5 of 2,424)13.
- Bone loss: Lupron Depot 3.75 mg causes loss of bone density, some of which may not reverse after stopping4.
- Nausea and blood pressure: in Vyleesi’s main trials, 40% of women had nausea, versus 1% on placebo, and each dose briefly raises blood pressure12.
- Bone tumors in rats: teriparatide (Forteo) and abaloparatide (Tymlos) caused osteosarcoma, a bone cancer, in rats; cases have been reported in patients treated with Forteo, but observational studies in people have not found a higher risk12.
For unapproved peptides, there are too few data to say whether risks differ for women: FDA found no human safety data for MOTS-c or TB-500, for example4142. Product quality is a separate risk: at least 30 people had fever, chills or shock-like illness after IV drips made with supplement-grade glutathione, FDA said in August 202643.

Questions people ask
What is the best peptide for women?
No peptide is best for women in general: approved peptide drugs each treat a specific condition, such as Vyleesi for one kind of low sexual desire before menopause and Forteo for osteoporosis after menopause112. Peptides marketed online for skin or tanning, such as GHK-Cu and melanotan II, are not approved drugs15161718.
Are peptides safe for women?
It depends on the peptide: approved drugs have known risks listed on their labels, such as nausea in 40% of women in Vyleesi’s main trials and hair loss reported more often by women than men on Zepbound and Wegovy121314. Most unapproved peptides have little or no safety data in anyone4142.
Can you take peptides while pregnant?
Several labels say to stop or avoid them: Wegovy’s and Zepbound’s say to stop the drug, when used for weight loss, once a pregnancy is recognized, and Lupron Depot 3.75 mg must not be used in pregnancy41314. Unapproved peptides have little or no pregnancy data; FDA found no published studies of kisspeptin-10’s effects on pregnancy, for example21.
Do peptides affect birth control?
Tirzepatide can: Zepbound’s label says it may make birth control pills less effective by slowing stomach emptying, an effect largest after the first dose, and that hormonal methods not taken by mouth should not be affected14. Wegovy’s label carries no birth-control warning13.
Are there peptides for menopause?
We found no peptide approved to treat menopause symptoms such as hot flashes, as of 7 October 202689. Forteo and Tymlos are approved peptides for osteoporosis after menopause, not for its symptoms12.
Do weight loss peptides work after menopause?
In an analysis of three tirzepatide trials funded by its maker, Eli Lilly, women grouped as after menopause also lost weight: in the first trial, 97% to 98% of women in every stage group on the highest dose lost at least 5% of their body weight, versus 29% to 33% on placebo714. Stages were assigned after the trials, mostly by age alone7.
Can peptides be used instead of HRT?
We found no peptide approved in place of hormone therapy (HRT): FDA’s menopause page lists it and four non-hormonal medicines, none a peptide8. Lynkuet, a non-hormonal hot-flash drug approved in 2025, is not a peptide either9. In a PubMed search on 8 October 2026, we found no randomized trial comparing a peptide treatment with hormone therapy for menopause11.
