Selank
Селанк (Russian brand name; Selank 0.15% nasal drops) · TP-7 (research code) · Thr-Lys-Pro-Arg-Pro-Gly-Pro (TKPRPGP) · Selank acetate (TP-7) (name on FDA’s compounding lists) · Selanc (spelling used by some sellers) · N-Acetyl Selank (vendor name for a modified form, a different molecule)
Selank is a lab-made chain of 7 amino acids built from tuftsin, a small immune peptide, and sold in Russia as nose drops for anxiety12. Its anxiety evidence comes from small Russian trials without a placebo group34.

Quick answers
- What is it?
- A lab-made chain of 7 amino acids. It adds a 3-amino-acid tail to tuftsin, a small peptide from the immune system, to make it resist breakdown1. Russia sells it as nose drops for anxiety, without a prescription25.
- Does it work?
- Not proven. In one Russian trial without a placebo, anxiety eased about as much as with medazepam, a Valium-like drug3. Added to a similar drug, it did not clearly help at 2 weeks4. No trial is registered in the main US database6.
- Is it safe?
- Unclear. The Russian label lists only allergic reactions and an unpleasant taste, and says it causes no dependence5. FDA says it may trigger immune reactions and that the agency lacks information on its safety in people7. A US review calls it poorly studied8.
What it is
Selank is a lab-made peptide, a chain of 7 amino acids: threonine, lysine, proline, arginine, proline, glycine and proline (Thr-Lys-Pro-Arg-Pro-Gly-Pro)116. The first four make up tuftsin, a small piece of the antibody protein IgG whose main known job is to spur immune cells to engulf germs1. Russian scientists added a proline-glycine-proline tail, the same one used in semax, which they found best for stabilizing the molecule and making it resist enzymes1. The Russian label describes it as a synthetic version of tuftsin, a peptide the body makes, and classes it as an anti-anxiety drug2. How it works is not settled. Lab studies suggest it changes how GABA, the brain’s main calming messenger, binds to its receptors, the system that benzodiazepines such as diazepam (Valium) act on; in rats, a dose of selank or of GABA changed the activity of nerve-signaling genes in similar ways within an hour1718. It also blocks enzymes in human blood that break down enkephalins, the body’s own opioid-like peptides1920. In rats given alcohol for 30 weeks, it prevented memory problems during withdrawal and blocked an alcohol-linked rise in BDNF, a nerve-support protein, in memory-related brain areas21. Blood enzymes cut it into smaller pieces22.
Tuftsin was isolated in 1970 by Najjar and Nishioka1. In the early 1980s, the Russian researchers Valdman and Ashmarin proposed that this immune peptide also acts on the brain, and Russian scientists then built a longer-lasting version, named Selank1. Russia’s Ministry of Health registered Selank 0.15% nasal drops in 20091. Vidal now lists a 2025 registration held by the company Peptogen, which replaced an earlier one, and the drops are sold without a prescription2. Peptogen helped fund one of the main clinical trials4, and a 2013 English-language review of selank and semax was co-written by a semax developer1. In the US, FDA placed ‘Selank Acetate (TP-7)’ in Category 2 of its compounding list in 2023 after it was nominated for pharmacy compounding; the nomination was later withdrawn710.
Benefits: what the research shows
The human evidence is a handful of small Russian studies, published in Russian; we found no placebo-controlled anxiety trial3444. In 62 patients with generalized anxiety disorder or neurasthenia (nervous exhaustion), anxiety eased similarly in 30 given selank and 32 given medazepam, a Valium-like benzodiazepine; selank also eased fatigue and had a stimulating effect3. That abstract does not say whether patients were randomized or blinded, although PubMed indexes it as randomized3. A 2014 open randomized study gave 60 adults with anxiety disorders selank (2.7 mg a day) or phenazepam, another benzodiazepine (2 mg a day), for 14 days44. At day 14, fewer people on selank met the response criteria (5 vs 7) and their anxiety scores fell less (26.3% vs 55%), but a week after both drugs stopped, selank had more responders (17 vs 9, p=0.037)44. Its English summary reports ‘pronounced anxiolytic and mild nootropic effects’24. A 2015 ‘open naturalistic prospective’ study randomly assigned 70 patients to phenazepam alone (2 mg a day) or with selank (2.7 mg a day) for 14 days4. At day 14, 40% responded with selank added versus 23% on phenazepam alone, a difference that was not statistically significant (p=0.14). All treatment then stopped, except in 20 patients of the selank group who took selank alone for a third week; 75% of them were responders at day 21, versus 30% in the phenazepam group, who by then were on no treatment. The paper does not say how those 20 were chosen. Adding selank reduced phenazepam’s side effects. The trial was funded in part by Peptogen, which holds the Russian registration24. Other human data are smaller still. In patients with anxiety and fatigue, 14 days of selank shifted the balance of two types of immune signals, and in lab tests on blood cells from patients with depression it switched off the gene for IL-6, an inflammatory signal, although IL-6 levels in the culture rose25. A placebo-controlled study in 52 healthy volunteers given selank, semax or placebo measured only brain-scan patterns at rest26. The developers’ review cites Russian studies in which 2,700 µg a day quickly eased anxiety, including in patients over 50; we could not open them1. No selank trial is registered on ClinicalTrials.gov: a search on 7 October 2026 returned 10 records, none mentioning selank6. Animal results depend on the strain: in mice, selank reduced anxiety only in BALB/c mice, a strain with higher baseline anxiety, and not in C57BL/6 mice, whether given in the nose or the abdomen127. In rats it reduced anxiety-like behavior from day 2 of a 4-week course without changing weight, and one dose eased signs of morphine withdrawal by 39.6%, versus 49.3% for diazepam2829. A 2021 US review in the Journal of Clinical Pharmacology called phenibut and selank ‘poorly studied Russian drugs with GABAergic mechanisms that are inexplicably sold to US consumers as dietary supplements’8.

Doses studied
Doses below are what studies used or what a label says. They are not advice, and gray-market products may not contain what their label says.
In human studies
Russian label (nasal drops, 1.5 mg per mL): 2 drops in each nostril 3 times a day for 14 days, repeatable after 1 to 3 weeks on a doctor’s advice; the label does not state the amount per drop5. Trials: 2.7 mg a day for 14 days, compared with phenazepam44 or added to it and then given alone to day 214; neither paper states the route. The developers’ review describes 2,700 µg a day in anxiety studies, including a 14-day course in patients over 501. We found no human study of selank injected under the skin.
In animal studies
As reported. Rats: 0.3 mg/kg into the abdomen daily for 4 weeks (anxiety)28, daily for 7 days (alcohol withdrawal and memory)21, or once (morphine withdrawal)29; 300 µg/kg in a gene-activity study18. Mice: 300 µg/kg a day for 5 days, in the nose or the abdomen27; 200 to 3,000 µg/kg in anxiety tests1.
What users report Anecdotal · not validated · not a recommendation
A peptide dosing site (updated 26 September 2026) lists 300 µg per dose as a nasal spray, 3 times a day (900 µg a day). It calls this ‘research reference only’, a translation of the Russian drop schedule, and says a custom solution and pump ‘are not equivalent to the registered preserved formulation’39.
- Half-life
- Minutes12The Russian label says that after a nasal dose selank appears in the blood within 30 seconds, with 92.8% absolute bioavailability, and that blood levels fall steadily over 5 to 5.5 minutes; it does not say which species these figures come from2. The developers’ review gives a half-life of about 2 minutes in lab tests1. Blood enzymes cut it into smaller pieces, mainly TKPRP, TKP, RP and GP22. In rats, nasal dosing delivered the most to the brain of the routes compared, and the peptide built up in stomach tissue whatever the route38.
- Routes
- Nasal drops (Russia’s 0.15% product; the form in the Russian studies that state a route)
- Nasal spray (sold online and by US clinics, alone or blended with semax; no human data found on these products)
- Subcutaneous injection, under the skin (sold online; no human data found)
- Intraperitoneal injection, into the abdomen (animal studies only)
Legal status
- United States
- Not approved by FDA for any use; federal prosecutors have described it as an unapproved new drug30. A Kentucky compounding pharmacy pleaded guilty to distributing unapproved new drugs from 25 October 2018 to 1 April 2020; its plea agreement says these included selank and semax. On 24 February 2021 it was sentenced to 3 years of probation and forfeited $1,788,906.82, its 2019 sales of these products30. In a 10 November 2021 warning letter to an Indianapolis firm, FDA noted that selank, semax and several other peptides ‘were not nominated for inclusion on the 503A bulks list’ at that time32. A 2021 review said selank was ‘inexplicably sold to US consumers as dietary supplements’8. No selank trial is registered on ClinicalTrials.gov (searched 7 October 2026)6.
- US pharmacies
- Section 503A of federal drug law covers compounding by pharmacies for individual patients. FDA added ‘Selank Acetate (TP-7)’ to Category 2 of its interim 503A bulks list, substances that raise significant safety concerns, in its 29 September 2023 update10. The nomination was later withdrawn, and FDA’s safety-risk page now lists selank acetate under ‘Bulk drug substances nominated but withdrawn’, substances ‘previously in category 2’ whose nominators withdrew them7. That page says selank acetate ‘may pose risk for immunogenicity for certain routes of administration due to the potential for aggregation and peptide-related impurities’ (unwanted immune reactions from clumping and impurities), and that ‘FDA lacks important information regarding any safety issues raised by selank acetate administered to humans’7. Selank is in no category of the list updated 14 May 2026, so US pharmacies cannot lawfully compound it under section 503A; being out of Category 2 does not make a substance eligible933. Unlike semax, selank is not among the 12 peptides that a law firm lists as leaving Category 2 after FDA’s 15 April 2026 notice33. It was not on the agenda of the July 2026 advisory committee meeting34, and it is not among the 5 substances FDA lists for a later meeting before the end of February 202745. We could not find who nominated it or when the nomination was withdrawn.
- Other countries
- Russia: Vidal and RLS, two Russian drug references, list Selank 0.15% nasal drops (registration ЛП-№(010951)-(РГ-RU), dated 15 July 2025, replacing ЛСР-003338/09), held by Peptogen and sold without a prescription25. Its uses include anxiety states, panic attacks, neurasthenia, fatigue (asthenia), mood instability, sleep problems and adjustment disorders2. The developers’ review says Russia’s Ministry of Health first registered it in 20091. The official Russian register (GRLS) could not be opened. Canada: Health Canada lists selank among unauthorized injectable peptides seized from a Calgary clinic (1 April 2025) and seized from and sold by an online seller (1 August 2025); it says injectable peptides are regulated as prescription drugs in Canada and that ‘For Research Use Only’ labels do not make products legal141535. Belgium: Sciensano, Belgium’s public health institute, identified selank and semax in two suspicious preparations encountered at the end of 2017 and 201836. Australia: selank is not named in the Poisons Standard in force from 1 October 202631. UK and EU: not verified.
- Sport
- Selank is not named on WADA’s (World Anti-Doping Agency) 2026 Prohibited List or on the 2027 List, which takes effect on 1 January 2027, and by our reading no named class such as S2 (peptide hormones, growth factors, related substances and mimetics) covers it1112. Class S0 bans substances not covered elsewhere ‘with no current approval by any governmental regulatory health authority for human therapeutic use’; the 2027 List adds ‘peptides’ to its examples1112. Russia has approved selank as non-prescription nose drops, registered as ЛП-№(010951)-(РГ-RU)2. By our reading, that current approval puts selank outside S0, so it is likely allowed. This is not a WADA ruling, and it rests on a Russian approval, so athletes should not rely on it. WADA’s note on the 2027 List says that even if a peptide is not named, ‘utmost caution should be taken as it may still be prohibited and may be harmful to health’37.
Quality and the gray market
What testing finds
Finnrick, an independent testing service, lists a single selank test, from one seller on 3 August 2026, and it was incomplete13. Incomplete tests do not count toward its pass rate, so there are no usable purity data40. FDA says selank acetate may carry risk from clumping (aggregation) and peptide-related impurities7. On one US seller’s site (accessed 5 October 2026), the selank page listed the correct formula (C33H57N11O9) and weight (751.88)41. In Belgium, Sciensano identified selank and semax in two suspicious preparations encountered at the end of 2017 and 201836. No FDA sampling or recall of selank was found.
How it is sold
FDA’s 2026 review of semax found a US website selling a ‘50:50’ semax and selank blend as a 2.5 mg/mL injection and a 1.25 mg/mL nasal spray42. Online sellers offer research-labeled vials: one US seller listed selank 10 mg at $52 and ‘N-Acetyl Selank’ 10 mg at $71, ‘sold for laboratory research use only’ (accessed 5 October 2026)2341. A 2021 review said selank was being sold to US consumers as a dietary supplement8. Demand signals are thin: Finnrick had logged a single selank test by 3 August 202613. Health Canada has seized selank from a Calgary clinic and from an online seller1415, and a Kentucky pharmacy whose plea agreement names selank among the unapproved drugs it distributed was sentenced in 202130.
Side effects and risks
- Little safety data: the human studies were small and short, and FDA says it ‘lacks important information regarding any safety issues raised by selank acetate administered to humans’7.
- Unwanted immune reactions: FDA says it may pose a risk of immunogenicity from clumping and impurities7. The Russian label lists allergic reactions, including delayed ones, and warns that its preservative, methylparaben, may cause allergy5.
- Effects on other calming drugs: selank appears to act on the GABA system, the target of benzodiazepines, and in stressed rats it changed and strengthened diazepam’s anti-anxiety effect1743. The label reports no established interaction with haloperidol, barbiturates or alcohol, but a US review calls selank poorly studied58.
- Dependence claims are untested independently: the Russian label says it does not cause drug dependence or habituation, and its developers report no withdrawal or dependence in mice, but no independent study has checked this15.
- Pregnancy and age: the label rules out use in pregnancy, breastfeeding and under age 182.
- Unknown contents: Finnrick has no completed selank test, and Health Canada warns that unauthorized injectable peptides may carry risks such as infection, allergic reactions and contaminants1315.
- Legal and sport risk: Health Canada has seized selank products, and a US pharmacy whose plea agreement names selank among the unapproved drugs it distributed was sentenced in 20211530. WADA urges ‘utmost caution’ with unnamed peptides37.
Questions people ask
Is Selank FDA approved?
No. FDA has not approved selank for any use, and federal prosecutors have described it as an unapproved new drug30. In Russia, Selank 0.15% nose drops are registered and sold without a prescription25.
Is Selank a benzodiazepine?
No. Selank is a peptide of 7 amino acids, not a benzodiazepine, but lab studies suggest it acts on the same GABA calming system117. In one small Russian trial, its anti-anxiety effect was similar to that of the benzodiazepine medazepam3.
Selank vs semax: what’s the difference?
Both are Russian nasal peptides of 7 amino acids that end in the same Pro-Gly-Pro tail1. Selank starts with tuftsin, an immune peptide, and is sold for anxiety; semax starts with a piece of ACTH, a stress hormone, and is sold for stroke and memory1. FDA found a ‘50:50’ blend of the two marketed in the US42.
Is Selank legal in the US?
It is not an approved drug, and US pharmacies may not compound it79. A Kentucky pharmacy whose plea agreement names selank among the unapproved drugs it distributed was sentenced in 202130.
Is Selank addictive?
Its Russian label says it does not cause drug dependence or habituation, and its developers report no withdrawal or dependence in mice15. We found no independent human study of dependence, and a 2021 US review called selank ‘poorly studied’8.
What is N-acetyl selank?
A modified form sold online, with an acetyl group capping the start of the chain23. It is not the Russian medicine, and we found no human study of it.
What is still unknown
- Who nominated selank for US compounding, and when was the nomination withdrawn? FDA’s pages show only that it was added to Category 2 in 2023 and is now ‘nominated but withdrawn’.
- Is the Russian registration current in the official State Register of Medicines (GRLS)? GRLS could not be opened; Vidal and RLS list it.
- How much selank is in each drop of the Russian product? The label gives the strength (1.5 mg per mL) but not the drop size, so its schedule cannot be compared directly with the 2.7 mg a day used in trials.
- Were the 2008 and 2014 comparisons with benzodiazepines randomized or blinded? Their abstracts do not say, and the full texts could not be opened.
- The Russian studies of 2,700 µg a day cited in the developers’ review (by Neznamov and by Teleshova) could not be opened.
- Does selank cause dependence or withdrawal in people? Only label and developer claims were found.
- Is selank approved anywhere besides Russia? Not verified.
- What is its legal status in the UK and EU? Not verified.
- What did the vials contain? Finnrick’s only test was incomplete.
- How large is US demand? Reddit and Google Trends could not be checked for this article.
